The Green Climate Fund & NDC implementation in Africa

The workshop will aim to unpackage concerns over the state of the GCF with regards to outcomes of Katowice Climate Change Conference and potential impact of the omission of additional finances in Katowice package. Moreover, Participants will familiarize with the Green Climate Fund and its current state of play and challenges, and share extensive experience on GCF matters and how best CSO engagement with almost. They will identify common challenges, such as the complexity of the GCF, insufficient international and in-country information flows (from relevant institutions, but also within civil society), lack of capacity and resources to fully engage in GCF issues, and insufficient attention by institutions to the contributions that CSOs can bring to the table. They also learned that situations vary in the countries and many good examples of active collaboration between CSOs and government institutions on the GCF exist.
Focused discussions among, participants will draw concrete ideas for next steps of CSO engagement and the interaction with other institutions, in the areas of strengthening the technical capacities of African CSO’s on the various modalities of the multilateral fund. Additionally, participants will come up with strategies on collaboration with NDA and NIE to deliver a bankable concept note/proposal on thematic areas of interest to African countries for GCF funding considerations. Finally, stakeholders will interrogate existing climate finance and governance systems that could catalyze a shift in Africa’s engagement with the GCF and generate positive, cascading effects on institutional strengthening, direct access accreditation and securing funding.
