There is growing recognition of the role that well-managed ecosystems can play in supporting adaptation - through increasing resilience and decreasing vulnerability of people and their livelihoods to the impacts of climate change. Well-managed ecosystems have a greater potential to adapt to climate change, resist and recover more easily from extreme weather events, and provide a wide range of benefits on which people depend. In contrast, poorly managed, fragmented and degraded ecosystems can increase the vulnerability of people and nature to the impacts of climate change.

In Kitui County, mainstreaming EbA into policy will promote integrated approach to climate change impacts and can robustly address both the climatic extreme events and sustainability issues. The key purpose of mainstreaming is to achieve the goals of ensuring healthy and productive ecosystems and promote adaptation practices as part of overall development interventions.

This project seeks to address the gaps in the existing climate related policies at the national and county. The project will advocate for the Ecosystem Based Approaches to be used as the overall approach in national and county level policies and plans. The key policies that will be targeted in the policy advocacy are agriculture, the National Adaptation plan, Energy and water polices. The project will target key policy makers at national and county level to achieve its policy advocacy agenda. The policy/decision makers that will be targeted are Directors, Cabinet Ministries and legislators.  Women groups, Natural Resource Management groups, and Community Management Disaster Risk Reduction groups, Charcoal Production Association groups at the national and county level will also key in the PACJA’s advocacy process.

Project Outcomes

  1. National government authorities take action to develop, adopt or operationalize laws, policies and budgeted strategies that support the protection and sustainable management of natural resources through ecosystem-based adaptation in an equitable manner
  2. County Government authorities take action to develop, adopt or operationalize laws, policies and budgeted strategies that support the protection and sustainable management of natural resources through ecosystem-based adaptation in an equitable manner.
