What’s it all about?

Launched during the World Environment Day 2018 in Nairobi, Kenya, the 4th Edition of the African Climate Change and Environmental Reporting (ACCER) Awards aims to incentivize and create a critical mass of journalists reporting on the area of climate change and environment.

The 2018 ACCER Awards contest theme “Changing the Narrative on Environmental Challenges in Africa: the Case of Pollution” will guide participants’ entries and awards based on how they demonstrate information delivery in the following specified categories:

  1. Print
  2. Radio
  3. Television
  4. Photojournalism
  5. Online (multi-media)

Potential awardees will present direct entries with brief citations demonstrating how their journalism may have practically enhanced access to information delivery in a specified area in either English or French.

Award Selection criteria will be based on:

  • Eligibility
  • Originality, structure and quality of writing/broadcast
  • Creativity : use of relevant interviews and examples to illustrate issues
  • Variety of voices/quotes used
  • Fluency (quality of the language- engaging writing/radio style, correct spelling and grammar)
  • Respect of the prescribed submission format


  1. Eligibility: The competition is open to all journalists from Africa and from established media houses: private or public-sector media. Freelance journalists are also eligible.
  2. Submission Format:

i) Entries must be original pieces written or broadcast in English or French only.
ii) Entries submitted in each category MUST be from between January 2017 – June 2018. Articles published outside the indicated time-frame will not be accepted.
iii) Each candidate will submit only one print (in word) or audio piece (in mp3 format).
iv) All entries are to be submitted in the format below:

  • Print word limit: Maximum 1,200 words
  • Font: Arial, 12 point
  • 5 line spacing
  • Audio pieces: Maximum (5) five minutes
  • TV pieces: Maximum (5) five minutes


June 5, 2018:  Official launch of 2018 ACCER Awards and opening for entries to eligible journalists across Africa

August 5, 2018:  Deadline for submission of entries

August 27 – 30, 2018: Review of entries by a panel of judges and decision-making

August 31, 2018:  Announcement of the 2018 ACCER Awards Finalists

October 6 – 9, 2018: ACCER Awards Finalists Academy; training and networking workshop for the finalists in Nairobi, Kenya

October 11, 2018: Announcement of Winners and Gala Night during the seventh edition of the Climate Change and Development in Africa (CCDA-VII) Conference


Overall Prize: Cash reward of US$1000, full sponsorship (including return air ticket, accommodation and other living expenses) for UN Climate Change Conference on 3 – 14 December 2018 in Katowice, Poland, fellowship to participate in high-level reporting and training throughout 2019 courtesy of ACCER Awards Partnership.

  • The Award shall be given to only journalists (reporters, editors, producers, broadcasters) working in Media including freelance journalists.
  • The entries will not expose the identity of the author when sent to the jury. The Administration Committee shall, however, maintain the identity of the author of each nomination.
  • The Judges reserve the right to disqualify any entry if it does not meet the contest criteria and set regulations.
  • By entering, participants warrant that their print/ audio materials are original and do not infringe on any third party’s rights.
  • Contest entry constitutes an agreement to allow PACJA to publicize contestants’ names, occupations, countries, and to publish entries.
  • Contest entry also constitutes an agreement to allow PACJA to use the material in its publications and in promotional activities. Applicants will retain ownership and all other rights to future use of their material.
  • If, for any reason, the competition is not completed as planned, PACJA reserves the right at its sole discretion to cancel, terminate, modify or suspend it.
  • The decisions made by the panel of judges are final and beyond dispute.
  • All participants in this competition implicitly accept the rules presented in this document.
